At least
four people have been killed in the Gambia's capital, Banjul, as government
forces foiled an alleged coup plot against President Yahya Jammeh.
According to
reports, some armed men led by former State House Commander, Lt Colonel Lamin
Sanneh, invaded the country from neighbouring Senegal and attacked the
presidential palace in Banjul and the military post at the Denton Bridge, which
links Banjul to the southern part of the country.
Military
sources said, ‘’The presidential palace was attacked early this morning at about
3.00am by armed individuals of whom some came from the presidential guard. The attackers were successfully driven back.’’ Sources said the coup was foiled by loyal
troops.
Jammeh has
ruled over the rural country of some 1.8million people since 1994 when he first
seized power. He was re=elected into
office two years later.
Though
Gambia officials said the president was on a private visit to Dubai, foreign
diplomats however said President Jammeh was in France on medical visit.
He is
however said to be on his way back to Gambia after hearing this news.
