The unidentified man was shot at about 1pm local time today at Port Columbus International Airport.
The shooting took place outside the airport's departures
terminal, Columbus Regional Airport Authority vice president David
Whitaker said.
Mr. Whitaker did not provide details on the confrontation, but said the
officer had been responding to a threat.
The policeman was not injured.
It was not immediately clear if the victim was armed.
Authorities searched a vehicle parked at the scene for explosives as a
precaution, Mr Whitaker said. He
added there was no indication of further threats to the airport.
The departures area was blocked off, but the airport said flights were
running as scheduled.
Departing passengers were directed to enter through the arrivals area.
