Video of a woman being beheaded
on the street by Saudi Arabian officials has gotten the person who made the
recording into trouble.
The video recording is
about Layla bint Abdul Mutaleb Bassim who was publicly executed in Mecca last
week after a Saudi court found her guilty of murdering and sexually assaulting
her stepdaughter. She screamed her innocence until the moment “professional
swordsman” killed her.
A human rights activist
recorded the incident and posted it online, attempting to draw attention to the
country’s judicial system. He has now been arrested and faces possible charges
under a law punishing cybercrimes.
Saudi Arabia has increased
its execution rate recently, some say to show its mettle in the midst of
regional turmoil. The al Saud family objects that the beheadings are no less
humane than American executions, and that unlike ISIS, the Sunni extremist
group that has made a vice of beheadings, they only execute those who have been
convicted of crimes.
The country has also faced scrutiny in the past
couple of weeks for publicly flogging a blogger
