An Amtrak train crashed in Philadelphia Tuesday
night prompting a mass causality incident that claimed the lives of five
people.
Train 188 was traveling from Washington D.C. to
New York City when it crashed around 9:20pm as it went into a turn just a few
miles outside of 30th Street Station.
The train, which had been carrying 238
passengers and five crew members at the time of the crash, had seven cars
derail, all of which came entirely off the tracks.
In addition to the fatalities, 65 people were
injured and six were in critical condition, a number that could rise as not all
passengers on the train have been accounted for by officials.
'This was an absolute disastrous mess,' said
Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia.
'I have never seen anything like it in my
life.'
Rescue workers were seen with flashlights
searching next to multiple train cars that had been tipped on their sides
shortly after the accident, telling people to get back as they searched for
survivors and injured passengers.
Six of the cars that derailed had overturned and
the engine completely separated from the rest of the train.
One car split in half during the crash
FBI agents arrived on the scene soon after the
crash but said there is no indication of terrorism in the derailment.
