The Ugandan nanny who tortured a toddler pleads guilty in court

Ugandan nanny Jolly Tumuhirwe, who was caught on camera viciously beating and kicking 18-month old Arnella Kamanzi, today in court pleaded guilty to torture.

Police originally said they would charge Tumuhirwe with attempted murder, but State prosecutor Joyce Tushabe today said she felt remorse and would be charged with torture charge alone.

“She said she was sorry for the act. She asked for forgiveness from the parents of the child, the nation, and those she said were affected by her acts,” said Tushabe.

Tumurhirwe is to be remanded in custody until her sentencing on Wednesday.   She faces a maximum 15-years imprisonment.

Footage of Tumuhirwe, viciously beating Arnella with a torch, throwing her on the floor and standing on her back went viral on social media.

Arnella’s father, Erick Kamanzi, had secretly planted hidden security cameras in his house.  He noticed bruises on the toddler’s body when he got home from work. When he reviewed the security tapes, he discovered his daughter’s brutal assault.

The father of the toddler was said to have beaten up the nanny seriously.  She was reportedly confined to a wheelchair and eating through a tube following the attack. Although she laid a charge of assault against Kamanzi, this was later dropped as soon as the police saw the video.
