Former President of South Africa, Mr. Thabo Mbeki, has
been named the winner of the 2014 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, for
demonstrating similar leadership qualities with the sage, Chief Obafemi
Awolowo.
With this, Mbeki joined Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole
Soyinka, winner of the maiden edition of the prize, in the Foundation’s Hall of
Fame.
Announcing the winner to the media, on Friday,
Chairman of the Selection Committee of the awards, Chief Emeka Anyaoku,
explained that the choice of the former president was arrived at after a
rigorous process of nomination and subsequent screening by a selection
Committee consisting of eminent Nigerians, who had distinguished themselves in
their different fields of endeavour.
He will be decorated with a medal, a certificate
and a plaque on March 6th 2015 in Lagos, to coincide with the sage’s
birthday
