11 killed in another deadly coal mine explosion in China

At least 11 people were killed today in the second deadly coal mine accident to hit China in two days, pointing to continuing safety issues in the industry despite a major decline in deaths among miners in recent years.

The official Xinhua News Agency said 19 people were working in a mine in the southern province of Guizhou when an explosion ripped through the shaft early in the morning.

 

Egypt court sentences 78 minors to 340 years in prison over protests

Seventy-eight Egyptian minors have been handed sentences of between two and five years in prison by a juvenile court in Alexandria on charges of "belonging to an outlawed group," according to Egypt's state news agency.    The 78 minors were arrested for taking part in protests organised by the Muslim Brotherhood that called for the fall of the government and the return of deposed former president Mohamed Morsi to power.  They were also charged for obstructing traffic and for spreading fear among local residents and store owners.

Abductors released Delta State University lecturer, insist on ransom before releasing brother

A lecturer Dr. Nyaerohovwo Tonukari of the Delta State university, Abraka, who was abducted 45 days ago on his way from Sapele to school, has been released by his abductors. However, his younger brother, Tega, who was also abducted with him, was not released. 

Tonukari’s release came a day after the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) protested at the Government House, Asaba, and at the Office of the Police Commissioner, to draw attention to the plight of their colleague.

Eje Ebi, 25years, was in the Ikorodu area of Lagos machete to death by one Adesina Osinowo, a cobbler.

 

The victim met his death when the suspect wanted to dispossess him of some money he was taking to the market to purchase goods.

 

 

Yomi Peters, ex-stores player finally goes home!

The 74-year-old former stationery stores player and coach has finally surcomes to the battle with gastric cancer.  He died at about 9.20am yesterday.

 

Peter was said to have initially be diagnosed with tumour but after series of tests was discovered to have had gastric cancer.

 

Initially, he had difficulties settling his hospital bills until Lagos State Government volunteered to take over the bills.

 

 

Nine people including an American arrested for assisting in transporting cocaine to the UK

Nine more people have been picked up by Ghanaian security operatives in connection with the cocaine bust involving a Ghanaian woman, Nayele Ametefe at London Heathrow Airport.
 

The arrest of the nine came after a swoop by a team of security agents. The nine arrested include two ladies who are believed to have travelled with Miss Ametefe but bolted when she was accosted by airport officials. Their names have been given as Nana Akua Amponsah and Sadalia Sandra Nuhu.

 

 

77-year-old woman in court for N65m land scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  today November 26, 2014 arraigned a 77- year-old woman, Alhaja Mulikat Shonekan and two others: Martins Ogiogwa, 40 and Mujekanm Petroleum Nigeria Company Limited, before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of Lagos State High Court, Ikeja on a 5-count - charge bordering on conspiracy to obtain money under false pretence and issuance of dud cheque.

Former President Obasanjo, who was the Chairman at a book launch at Abuja in honour of the pioneer Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Mr. Mustapha Aknbi called on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to stop encouraging verbal violence which may not physically hurt but can generate into physical violence. 

 

He said, “Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated.''

 

“As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up.”

 

 

 

Malaysian court sentenced Nigerian man to death for drug trafficking

A Nigerian, Abuchi Ngwoke, 35, was yesterday 25th November 2014 sentenced to death by a Malaysian High Court for drug trafficking.

Abuchi Ngwoke was arrested at a Malaysian airport in 2012 after been found with 251.66 grams of Methamphetamine.  He was said to have swallowed the drugs in Nigeria before boarding a flight to Malaysia.

 

A date is yet to be fixed for his execution.

A glowing Jolie beamed with smiles as she attended the London premiere of her latest film ''Unbroken'' last night.  

 

The movie which was produced and directed by the Hollywood star follows the real life of American Olympic runner and prisoner of war Louis Zamperiri.  The 39-year-old goodwill ambassador was accompanied by Chelsea pensioners and members of the British Armed Forces at the premiere last night.

The brunette rocked the red carpet in a cream Ralph Russo dress as she was guided on the red carpet by James Fellows and Cecil Bake both former  members of the British Armed Forces but who now live at the Royal Hospital Chelsea - a retirement home for those who served in the armed forces.

IS stones two men to death for alleged gay practices

The Islamic State group stoned two men to death in Syria today after claiming they were gay, said a news source.  This is the jihadist organization’s first executions for alleged homosexuality. “The IS today stoned to death a man that it said was gay,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that the victim was around 20 years old.  He was killed in Mayadeen in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, near the border with Iraq. 

Wole Soyinka diagnosed with cancer

At a press conference today, renowned playwright and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has announced that he was diagnosed of cancer last December.

 

Speaking at the June 12 Cultural Center in Ogun State, "Kongi" encouraged awareness and preventative measures in stopping the spread of the disease. He attributes early detection and proper nutrition to his stable health so far.
 

CNN reporter hit in the head with a rock while give live TV report

CNN reporter Sara Sidner was pelted in the head with a rock as she reported live from the streets of Ferguson, Missouri.

Sidner was standing across the street from a local business that had recently caught on fire when an anonymous person hit the CNN reporter in the head as she spoke remotely to anchor Jake Trapper.

Trapper immediately asked her if she was OK, to which she replied “I’m OK, I’m OK. I’ve been hit with much worse in my day.”

Two female suicide bombers hit market in Maiduguri, at least 27 dead and 45 injured

Dozens of traders and passerby were today (Tuesday) killed near Maiduguri main market when two suspected female suicide bombers dressed in full hijab detonated bombs hidden under their garments.

The explosions occurred at about 11:20 a.m. at a crowded Maiduguri commercial area called One-Way.  At least 27 people have been confirmed dead while 45 are said to be injured.

Ebola update: First Italian doctor to contract Ebola arrives Rome for treatment

The doctor, whose first name is said to be Fabrizio, and who is the first Italian to contract the Ebola virus arrived Rome today Tuesday from Sierra Leone for specialist treatment in an infectious diseases hospital Rome.

The doctor, a 50-year old from Sicily, was flown into the military airport of Pratica di Mare in a specially sealed unit and taken to the Lazzaro Spallanzani institute by ambulance.

The Italian health ministry was expected to hold a press conference later on Tuesday with details of his condition.

 

 

Man kills his 17-year-old niece over loud music

A teenage Pakistani girl aged 17-years has been shot dead by her uncle following a row over loud music, police said Tuesday.  The incident happened in the Kallar Kahar valley in Punjab province’s Chakwal district, around 120 kilometres (75 miles) from the capital Islamabad.

“The girl Rehana Bibi was alone at her home and was listening to music when her uncle, Muhammad Gulistan, came to her house and asked her to lower the volume,” Sadat Ali, an official on duty at Kallar Kahar police station stated.

Two suspected fraudsters in court for scamming a Belgian nurse of €61,500

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned two suspected fraudsters, Gabriel Osereme Xavi (a.k.a. Collins Page) and Aikhaituamen Best Junior Cyril, before Justice E.F. Ikponmwen of the Edo State High Court sitting in Benin, on charges bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence.   While Xavi was slammed with a 12-count charge, Aikhaituamen was docked on 6-count charge.

The duo however pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to them on November 21, 2014.

Suspected mastermind of Nyanya bomb blast freed by the court

Aminu Ogwuche, the suspected mastermind of the April 14, 2014 Nyanya bomb blast, which killed 75 persons yesterday had charges filed against him by the Nigerian police and the DSS struck out by Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court Abuja for want of diligent prosecution.  And also due to the absence of the legal representative of the Inspector General of Police in court.

 

Justice Ademola in his reading said, ''The criminal charge is hereby struck out for want of diligent prosecution by the complaint, Inspector General of Police and his prosecution.''
