Armed robbery gang leader killed in Niger State

Niger State Commissioner of Police, Olusola Emmanuel Amore, said at the weekend that the police have killed the leader of an armed robbery gang that had been terrorising border towns between Nigeria and Benin Republic  for 20 years.

He said  the robbery kingpin was killed by the police in a gun duel and that they operate mostly on market days between the border villages of Kabe and Safeluna dispossessing traders of the money and valuables.

Weapons recovered from them were a pistol, five live ammunitions, two empty cartridges, knives, cutlasses and motorcycles.  The commissioner said the gang leader died in  the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds in an exchange of fire with the police.

Amore said his command had carried out 37 raids within the month under review, arrested 82 persons out of whom 40 were freed while 42 were charged to court.

He said notable among those arrested were cultists who claimed to be students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. The group of suspected cultists were arrested in Maikunkele, Bosso Local Government Area.
