Saudi Arabia places strict restrictions on female driving despite lifting the ban

Saudi Arabia have moved a step closer to lifting its ban on female drivers despite the strict restriction it places on them.

Under the new recommendations, only women of 30-years and above are allowed to drive within a stipulated set time.  And such female would need permission from a male relative usually husband, father, brother or son.

The new rules also require that such female driver wears conservative clothing and should not have any make-up on behind the wheels.  They are allowed to drive within the cities, but when going out of the city should have a male companion inside the car.

It added that speaking with a female driver will be punishable by one-month prison sentence or a fine.  Saudi is creating a special female traffic department to deal with female drivers.

Saudi authorities have warned that anybody found violating these rules will be dealt with.  Although there are no written laws banning women drivers, only religious edicts.  The ban is based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law known as Wahhabism

Despite these strict regulations, the world still sees this as a step in the right direction.
