A man dressed up as Santa Claus to take photos with children at an East
London mall was fired after he allegedly fought his former father-in-law in
front of customers.
According to the report, the alleged assault took place at Hemmingways
Mall on Wednesday.
The father-in-law, Eugene Henning, told the newspaper he was listening
to music while doing his Christmas shopping.
“I was just standing looking around when Santa approached and asked me
to leave because my presence was interrupting him,” he said. Henning said it was then he realised the man
was his former son-in-law.
“I told him that I am a visiting member of the public with every right
to be there,” he said. The man, Gary Rusch, then allegedly smacked him.
Henning has since laid assault charges against him.
One shopper said his children began to cry when they saw what
happened. “No matter how upset he was, he should have stuck to [being Santa] and
kept his cool, not embarrassed himself and upset children who came especially
to see him,” said a concerned mother.
The mall’s marketing manager, Estee Roos said Rusch was fired following
the incident.
