35 dead, 42 injured in a New Year's stampade in Shanghai China

At least 35 people were confirmed killed in a stampede during the New Year's celebration in Shanghai which was caused when people rushed to collect fake money thrown from a building balcony.  The stampede occurred at about 11.35pm local time.
 
China State Xinhua News Agency also reported that up to 42 people were injured in the stampede and that they were taken to the Shanghai General Hospital.  Many of the injured are said to be students.
 







 
 
 
 
The incident happened in the Chen Yi Square which attracted up to 300,000 people last year New Year's eve.
 
President Xi Jinping had ordered an immediate inquest into the cause of the stampede.
