No fewer than 11 persons died on today when
two commercial buses collided at Uchi-Mbakor in Tarka Local Government Area of
Benue State.
A Toyota Hiace, said to belong to Ishwa and
Sons Motors, and another commercial Volkswagen Sharon bus, whose number plate
could no longer be identified, collided this morning.
It was learnt that three passengers in the
Hiace were said to have been burnt beyond recognition, just as the lifeless
bodies of other victims were pulled out from the wreckage of the vehicles by
passers-by.
The corpses of the victims and the injured
were conveyed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, and
other hospitals in the area.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the Hiace, after
colliding with the space bus, somersaulted into the bush and burst into
in flames while the other bus was said to have broken into pieces.
The Public Enlightenment Officer of the
Federal Road Safety Corps, Benue State Command, Mr. Samson Audu, confirmed the
accident but said the men of the command were still moving round the hospitals
to collate the casualty number at the time of filing this report.
