SYNAGOGUE: Explosion was not the cause of building collapse - Chief Medical Examiner

During the Coroner's Inquest set up to investigate and look into the cause of the building collapse at the Synagogue Church of all Nations yesterday; Professor John Obafunwa, a Consultant Pathologist ruled out claims of an explosion as the cause of the building collapse. Stating that none of the victims body showed any evidence of blast injuries.

Led in evidence by Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran, Counsel to the Lagos State Government, he said bodies of victims were mutilated, had severe crush, head injuries, fractured bones, badly dismembered bodies but none of these injuries was as a result of an explosion.

Building inspectors have said the likely cause of the collapse was as a result of additional floors added to the building without strengthening its foundations.

The September 12 tragedy claimed a total of 116 persons, 84 of them South Africans who were visiting the church for spiritual reasons.

Lulu Mnguni, Pretoria's top diplomat in Nigeria attended the hearing.
