Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes dies after severe head injury

25-year-old Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes is dead after suffering a severe head injury during a Sydney cricket match.

He passed away after failing to recover from an induced coma at the St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.  The cricketer who would have been 26 on Sunday was fatally injured when a hit by a ''bouncer'' somehow evading the cricketer's helmet landed on his neck.

Australian team doctor Peter Brukner told a press conference that Hughes suffered a ''massive bleed into his brain''.  He said that the ball hit the side of the neck and as a result of the blow, his vertebral artery was compressed by the ball.  That caused the artery to split and bleeding went up into the brain.

Doctors at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney where he was taken to, removed part of the batman's skull to relieve pressure on his brain.  But he did not improve and died from a cerebral haemorrhage.  He was said not to have regained consciousness before he passed on.
