The entry route into the estate was blocked by rioters
armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, leaving many commuters stranded and terrible traffic along the Lekki Expressway.
The incident which started at about 8.00am saw Lekki
Estate Shuttle bus drivers engaged the Okada riders in a scuffle which was said
to be a response to an earlier attack carried out by the later a night
before.
According to an anonymous source, he stated that, “It
all started yesterday when the Hausa okada riders attacked the bus drivers, they
shattered the windows of their bus and injured some of the bus drivers. This
morning, the drivers with the help of some men caught some of these okada
riders and beat them up.’’
The men
who were said to have carried cutlasses and blocked cars from driving through
Durosimi Etti road, burnt several motorbikes and attacked the Hausa bike
riders. One of the rioters said, ‘They
can’t come here and attack us, we will find them and kill them.’’
In early November, the Lekki Residents Association
placed an outright ban on commercial motorcyclists within the estate, stating
that both okada riders and passengers who float this rule will be arrested and
prosecuted.
