Two suicide bombers detonated bombs
today at one of Nigeria most prominent grand Mosque in Kano and gunmen then
opened fire on people who were trying to escape to safety after the blasts
occurred. The attack occurred during today,
Friday prayers at about 2pm.
After the assailants blew themselves
up in succession at the Grand Mosque in Kano, “gunmen opened fire on those who
were trying to escape”, Police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu told AFP.
He could not give the exact number of gunmen involved but they were estimated to be no fewer than 15. Ojukwu said a mob killed four of the attackers while the rest escaped in the chaotic aftermath.
At least 64 people were said to have been killed and more than 126 injured. These figures are expected to increase he said.
This blast at the Kano mosque where the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II always worship (the mosque is attached to his palace) is occurring barely a week after he issued a call to northerners to take up arms against the insurgents.
This blasts came after a bomb attack was foiled in a mosque in the northwestern city of Maduguri on Friday morning, and also five days after two female suicide bombers killed over 54 people in the city.
