The town of Azaya Kura in the Mafa area of Borno was yesterday attacked by Islamic extremists Boko Haram leaving 45 people dead and many others injured.
The Chairman of Mafa Local Government Area called the attack ''wicked and despicable.'' ''We have counted 45 bodies so far.''
Residents of the town said many others may have died from loss of blood after fleeing into the bushes with bullet wounds.
Mafa and its surrounding towns/villages have come under countless attacks from the insurgents in the past. On October 26, the insurgents abducted 30 boys and girls, as young as 11 and 13 years. March 2014, 29 people were killed by the extremists.
In this recent attack of yesterday, heavily armed gunmen were said to have arrived the town on motorcycles at about 12.00pm. An eye witness said the attackers destroyed more than half of the houses in the village, burnt over 50 motorcycles and four cars before taking away foodstuffs and animals.
The insurgents were said to have blocked the exits points from the town to prevent people from fleeing.
A survivor, Lawan, said, ''How can some people be so wicked to kill innocent people, 45 people dead at once without confrontation? There is no compulsion in religion and I am still searching for the motive behind these mass killings and destruction by some people under the guise of entrenching certain religion.''
''I wish to appeal to the Federal Government to take urgent steps and rescue our people from imminent extinction.
