The doctor who operated on over 80 women at an India mass sterilization camps over the weekend, and at which 14 women died has been arrested by the police.
The doctor, RK Gupta, and his assistant reportedly carried out tubectomies on 83 women in just five hours at the camp in Ballarpur district, Chhattisgarh state, on Saturday.
According to the BBC, government rules state one surgeon may only perform a maximum of 35 operations per day. The latest victim passed away on Wednesday night, while 90 others remain in critical condition after they were operated on at two camps, including the one at Ballarpur. The government has since banned the use of six medicines used in the operations pending the results of an investigation.
Local health officials have reportedly denied any responsibility for the deaths, but some said they were under pressure from the government to perform as many operations as possible. Indian authorities have promoted family planning in attempt to convince families to have less children.
Some officials are reportedly worried about the increasing population in the country. As a result, sterilisation camps are organised throughout the country with several states offering incentives to couples who volunteer.
