50 people arrested for the killing of a christian couple in Pakistan

Fifty people have been arrested in connection with this week's killing of a Christian couple who were beaten and killed after a local mullah declared them guilty.  The couple were accused of desecrating the holy Quran.  The incident happened in Kasur District in Punjab province of Pakistan.

The mob was said to have marched to their home, broke the door and dragged them aside.  The couple were identified as shyman Bibi Urf Shamar (wife) and her husband as Sajjad Nasir Zihjah Nazir Nazir.

A team was sent to the province by the Human Right Commission of Pakistan, who after investigation found the couple innocent.  The couple have three children and the dead woman was later discovered to be pregnant when she was killed.

Investigation also is pointing accusing fingers at the owners of the kiln who was said to have raised false alarm due to the inability of the couple to pay back the money they own him.  Pakistan anti-blasphemy law is often used to settle personal vendetta.

The province government has agreed to pay $49,000 as compensation for the death of the couple to their families.
