Jail break in Kogi State, 114 inmates set free

There was a jail break at the Koton-karfi Prison in Kogi State.  Gunmen invaded the prison and set at least 114 inmates free.

The State Controller of prison Mr. Adams Omale said the attack happened between 9.30pm and 10pm on Sunday.  He said of the 145 inmates, 119 of them were awaiting trial while 26 were convicted.  Omale added that one of the inmates was killed during the jail break.

The controller however said 12 of the inmates were either re-arrested or came back on their own.

It was gathered that the police and army were alerted of the invasion but got there too late.

Residents close to the prison said the attack went on for more than two hours.

Among those freed from the prison by the gunmen were armed robbery and murder convicts.

The governor of the State, Idris Wada, his deputy Mr. Yomi Awoniyi and the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Prison Service Mr. Aminu Suley were at the prison to access the damage.
