While speaking at the memorial service held for the slain Bafana Bafana goalkeeper on Saturday, KZN premier Senzo Mchunu said the KwaZulu-Natal International Training Centre and Football Academy will be named after Senzo Meyiwa. The memorial service was held at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“To rename this academy after Senzo will be a fitting tribute to him because he dedicated his entire life towards soccer” said Mchunu.
He described the late Meyiwa as a true champion of professionalism whose influence should be preserved for future generations. He said the academy will be use to nurture future leaders and ensure many of the local young stars becomes successful. He added “Taking the youth out of poverty is the lasting monument that will make Senzo Meyiwa rest in eternal peace. We want to make a firm commitment as the KZN government that we will use soccer as an instrument to build a sound economy that creates jobs and taking our youth out of poverty. That is the best we can do to honour this great young man.”
Meyiwa was shot dead during an apparent botched robbery at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, last week Sunday. Two men allegedly entered the home demanding cellphones while a third stood guard outside. The men shot Meyiwa and fled the scene.
He was laid to rest in Chesterville, Durban on Saturday in an intimate ceremony with family and friends.
