Lorenzo Vinciguerra, a Swiss wildlife photographer who was held hostage by Islamist extremists for more than 2 years escaped from captivity by over powering and cutting the throat of his captor with a machete.
The 49-year-old was held by rebels of the Aby Sayyaf group while on a bird-watching trip in Tawi-Taw province in Southern Philippines.
According to a Philippine officer, Lorenzo escaped during a clash between the insurgents and government troops. the photographer used the opportunity by wrestling with his guard and was able to grab the machete from the guard's hand and manages to slit his throat.
