Martin Salia, a doctor from Sierra Leone who contacted the Ebola virus while treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone died today while receiving treatment at Omaha.
Salia who was in an extreme critical condition was evacuated in a specially equipped ambulance for treatment at the Nebraska Medical Centre in the US.
During the course of his treatment, he was given both the blood of an Ebola survivor patient and the experimental drug ZMAPP. But he was said to already been experiencing kidney and respiratory failure as at the time he arrived the Nebraska Medical Centre.
“It is with an extremely
heavy heart that we share this news,” said Phil Smith, medical director of the
Biocontainment Unit at Nebraska Medical Centre. “Dr. Salia was extremely
critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we
weren’t able to save him.” “We used every
possible treatment available to give Dr. Salia every possible opportunity for
survival. As we have learned, early treatment with these patients is essential.
In Dr. Salia’s case, his disease was already extremely advanced by the time he
came here for treatment.”

Saliu who was born in Sierra Leone was a permanent US resident and lived in Maryland with his wife and children.
His wife, Isatu Salia, thanked the hospital staff for trying their best to save her husband's life.
Salia becomes the second person to die of the Ebola virus in the Unites States. The first was Thomas Eric Duncan who died in a Dallas Hospital.
